Best place to purchase domain?

February 22nd, 2012 3 comments

A common problem:

I’m creating a website for my friend’s photography business. She is going to buy the domain and everything, but I’m wondering… What is the best place to buy a domain from? What about web host? I’m thinking about GoDaddy… And should I ask her to purchase an FTP program, as well, or are there any free programs out there? Is FTP a necessity? I have experience with HTML and FTP, but I’ve never had my own domain, so that’s where I’m a bit confused. Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated.

What are the differences of a WEBSITE and a BLOG? I'm going to create a informational site, so which is best?

February 16th, 2012 5 comments

A typical query:

More info: My site definitely not going to be a personal site. It’ll be an informational (educational) site containing various facts related to technology. So which suits me best? A WEBSITE or A BLOG?

Moreover, can you name some of good FREE web hosting sites? (I need to try it free first before I buy my own domain. My requirements are about 1GB disk space, PHP with XML, MySQL, FTP access etc…)

Thank you in advanced.

Web Hosting Questions?

February 14th, 2012 5 comments

A common query:

alright… I know a fair bit about computers, but I know very little about making websites
I am running a mac right now, and I put together a website using iWeb, I know apple wants you to put the websites you design on their mobileme server, but there is a option where it asks for an ftp server address, username, password (not required), directory/path, protocol (it gives you options) and a place to enter a port, I assume this is all to enter information given to you by the hosting service you are paying to put your website on their server, correct?
so I know you need either a server (I am not gonna pay for that) or a webhost, and a domain name, what are the steps to get your website from iWeb to the internet?
also, what is your preferred, the cheapest, and the best webhost out there
thank you very much

email me if you have questions about my question haha

What would be the best way to share files with friends?

February 11th, 2012 1 comment

A typical problem:

I constantly have to send files to my friends varying from sizes of 1 mb to 1gb. I’ve been using those sites like megaupload and mediafire but those both are slow to upload and download. I’ve been considering setting up a FTP server hosted off my own computer but there are so many programs to make one I don’t know which one to choose. I don’t want to use torrents so please don’t suggest that. So please suggest what to use that offers good speed and little setup on the other persons end. I don’t want to confuse my friends when I want to send them a tiny file. Thanks for everyone who gives me a useful answer.
Also if I did decide to host my own FTP server would the download speed on the other persons side be determined by my upload speed or my download speed?
